El BerguedaThe region of El Bergueda with its capital city Berga, was built beneath the Figuerassa mountain. It is located in the central part of Catalonia in the most northern point of the province of Barcelona.
The region is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Barcelona El Prat Airport.
The region is mainly agricultural, but also has some small mining community, and textile manufacturing.
Mostly abandoned, some of the installations of these industries have been turned into museums and tourist attractions. Including the old workers housing, which is being renovated as holiday homes.
Above the river, you climb into lush hilly farmlands, mostly dairy farms, separated by forests of pine and oak.
The striking features of this region are the strange shapes of the enormous boulders and rocky outcrops
The capital, Berga, separates the region into Alt (high) Bergueda and Baix (low) Bergueda. The Alt Bergueda is very mountainous and scenic.
Beaches
The nearest beaches are approximately 1.5 hours drive, but well worth a day trip, as the coast in and around Barcelona has plenty to offer.
Leisure & recreationEl Bergueda is a fantastic place if you want to enjoy the great outdoors adventure: Mountain trekking, climbing, quad biking, hiking, alpine running, pony trekking and skiing, are just some of the sports you can experience here.
There are many good local restaurants serving simple mountain fare.
The region is very picturesque, and the less physically active will enjoy cruising through the area, taking in the scenery.
ClimateThe climate is temperate, with mild temperatures and moderate rainfall throughout the year. In the highlands the winters are cold with lots of snow, making them ideal ski-resorts.
On the coast hot summer temperatures are tempered by cooling sea breezes. Winters are exceptionally mild with some rain.
CuisineThe gastronomy of Catalonia is rich and varied; although principally it is the typical Mediterranean diet of fish, seafood, rice fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil and pasta.
We recommend that visitors try some traditional Catalan dishes whilst on holiday, especially delicious are
Escudella I Carn D'olla, vegetable broth with pork, veal and chicken. Pa Amb Tomàquet,
simply rustic bread, can be toasted, rubbed with tomato pulp and dressed with oil and salt; these delcious breakfast can also be served with ham, sausage or tortilla.
