La Seu d'Urgell

The town of La Seu d'Urgell is the main link between the Pyrenees, Segre, Andorra and the rest of Spain. It is a pretty town with good shopping, a good variety of restaurants, some old churches, and plenty of mountain charm.

The area specialises in milk production, with the high pastures providing grasses that allow for milk of the highest quality and flavour.

As visitor numbers continue to grow, the facilities that serve the region also continue to grow; there is an excellent choice of accommodation, and local activities and entertainment. Barcelona El Prat airport is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes drive.

Natural surroundings
The county of Alt Urgell occupies the high basin of the Segre at around 650 metres altitude. The Segre River has a good flow throughout the year and is particularly strong during the thaw. Alongside the Segre valley there are many other beautiful less well-known areas to explore. The area is sparsely populated, with just 13 inhabitants per m2.

Culture
Alt Urgell has an extensive and valuable cultural heritage, most significant is its Romanesque architecture. There are more than 100 examples of Romanesque churches in the region, with examples such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, in Seu; San Serni of Tavèrnoles in Anserall and Sant Climent de Coll Nargó. All three have been declared monuments of national cultural interest.

Markets
In the region there are four weekly markets, Tuesday and Saturday at Seu; Saturday in Oliana, and Sunday in Organyà.

Leisure & recreation
The area is perfect for enthusiasts of outdoor sports and pursuits such as cycling, fishing, golf, horse riding, hiking, and walking, facilities for which are available in abundance locally. There are lots of specialist activity companies who offer give tuition, make guided tours, and offer equipment hire.

There are also areas nearby for mountaineering. The region is excellent for runners, with some very tough training available in the mountains.
At the Segre Olympic Park, you can enjoy kayaking, rafting and hydro sports. It is possible to try paragliding, and at Bassella there is a 4 wheel drive adventure circuit.

Cuisine
The specialties of the region include snails, rice with rabbit and meat stews. In the town of Noguera, Cassoletes (a mix of vegetables with meat), is a typical dish and La Olla Aranesa" (a casserole dish) from the Arán valley.

Climate
In the mountains the weather is warm in summer, with wet springs and autumns. There is considerable snow during the winter.
